Appendix I

Quantitative Assessment: Tables and Data Sources for Key Indicators of the Health and Quality of Life in Bucks County

Overview

The growing proliferation, quality, and ease of access to web-based data resources makes a hard copy document such as the one compiled in this section cumbersome and almost immediately dated. Web resources make it possible to "drill down" for finer detail about geographic areas or sub populations and to update these tables to better serve the specific purposes of a presentation or report. The major resources used to compile the tables and charts in this appendix are as follows:

1. Demographics

Incarceration Rate

The prison incarceration rate for Bucks County in 2000 was 81.5 per 100,000 population. Incarceration rates for Chester and Montgomery County are two times higher, for Delaware County 2.7 times higher, for Philadelphia 11.7 times higher and for Pennsylvania as a whole 3.6 times higher than those of Bucks County. (The Bucks County rate is roughly comparable to the incarceration rate in France and Germany but still higher than the lowest rates in such developed countries as Sweden, Denmark, and Japan.)
